A week-long service initiative as part of Centre’s Annual Poverty and Homelessness Week is the Hygiene Product Drive sponsored by STAND: The Student Service Initiative, which this year will take place beginning Sunday, November 11th at 6:00 p.m. and will end on Saturday, November 17th at Noon both on Centre’s campus and in the community-at-large.
For persons experiencing poverty, access to basic hygiene amenities can be an incredible, often unaffordable expense. The high cost of shampoo, soap, conditioner, deodorant, hairbrushes, combs, tampons, pads, adult diapers, razors, combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other amenities can be a high-cost burden, leaving some households to limit use or go without in favor of meeting other expenses. The goal of the Hygiene Product Drive is to provide these items to people at no cost, allowing them to use money for other needs or have access to these amenities which they may not have otherwise. With oral healthcare, and the ability to be clean consistently existing as a requirement for work, school, and personal health, the event is designed to help combat a prolonged, often unaddressed community need.
Each year, STAND partners with a different community group and other campus organizations in order to make the drive a reality. In the past, collaborators have included the Isaiah Addiction Recovery House, New Hope Food Pantry, and the Soups on Us Service Group out of Danville’s Presbyterian Church. This year, STAND is proud to partner with another Centre student to do a localized Oral Hygiene Drive in addition to our normal collection which will be going to the Good Samaritan House in London, Kentucky where we will be having a large service event the Saturday before.
As a part of the Hygiene Product Drive, STAND reaches out to people in the greater Danville community in addition to collecting items from members of the campus community. There is a mailing list of nearly 400 Danville addressees that will receive information regarding the drive so that they have the opportunity to purchase or collect supplies that are among those requested.
Letters will be mailed out the week before Poverty and Homelessness Week, with contact information, a list of needed items, and a collection time which this year will be Noon on Saturday, November 17th. All residents have to do is leave their bagged items on their front stoop and a team of volunteers from STAND and other groups on campus will come by and pick them up.
If you live in a part of Danville that has not received letters in the past, but would like to participate, you can contact Hannah Gibbs at Hannah.firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange at at-home pick-up on Saturday, November 17th while volunteers are out, or you can drop off items at the Centre College Post Office on S. Beatty Avenue between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
On-Campus collection provides an opportunity for members of the campus community to participate in a way that is convenient for them. There will be large collection boxes in the Campus Center lobby, Grant Hall, Olin Hall, Young Hall, and Crounse Hall where donations can be left any time after 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11th through Noon on Saturday, November, 17th.
For large or heavy donations, a car or office based pick-up can be arranged by emailing Hannah Gibbs at Hannah.email@example.com for anytime during that week.
There will be information at the table outside of Cowan Dining Hall for anyone with questions or if you would like to drop off a donation on your way into lunch or while wlaking through the campus center. Tables will be manned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday of Poverty and Homelessness Week.
